DRABBLE CHALLENGE ~ SHOE

The drabble challenge is a weekly challenge hosted by Aheila on her blog : http://thewriteaholicblog.wordpress.com A reminder how it works : read the prompt and find your angle ; write a drabble (100 word story , give or take 5 words); post a direct link to the drabble in your comments .

The damaged item lay at the back of the broom cupboard . It was a red rubber flip-flop with a thick sole . Discovery of the shoe jolted him . Unwittingly , an old rhyme surfaced : old shoes , new shoes , red and pink and blue shoes … What was it doing there ? Odd …  where was its mate ?

A thought popped up – haphazard and formless . Then it took shape . Sandal . Tricycle .

The two words were somehow connected . His mind rebelled , refused to link the objects , no matter how hard he tried . Sandal . Tricycle .

He grappled with it . A sound ? Screech ?

Like a switch that trips , his mind shut down .

You’re so right ! It’s a mental block, which serves as a safety mechanism.
